Spravato® (Esketamine) Treatment in Wichita

Innovative Care for Treatment-resistant Depression

If you’ve tried multiple treatments for depression without success, there may still be hope. As an FDA-approved nasal spray designed specifically for adults with treatment-resistant depression, Spravato® offers additional possibilities.

What is Spravato®?

Spravato® is a form of esketamine, derived from ketamine, which works differently from standard antidepressants. It is FDA-approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression – meaning symptoms have not improved with at least two other antidepressant medications. At KU Wichita Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences clinics, we provide Spravato® nasal spray treatments in our clinic.

How Spravato® Works

Unlike traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks to work, Spravato® may provide noticeable relief within days to weeks.

Unique Mechanism

Unlike most antidepressants that target serotonin, Spravato® works on the brain’s glutamate system, helping to restore healthy brain connections.

Rapid Results

Some patients notice reduced depressive symptoms within hours to days of treatment.

Combination Approach

Spravato® is used alongside an oral antidepressant, creating a stronger treatment plan for long-lasting benefit.

What to Expect with Spravato® Treatment

Before Treatment

Your psychiatrist will review your medical history, depression treatment history and determine if Spravato® is right for you.

You’ll continue taking your prescribed oral antidepressant throughout treatment.

During Treatment

Spravato® is self-administered as a nasal spray under direct medical supervision.

After dosing, you’ll relax in a comfortable clinic setting for about two hours, where our staff will monitor you for safety and support.

After Treatment

You’ll need a responsible adult to drive you home. Patients cannot safely drive until the following day.

Temporary side effects may include dizziness, mild dissociation, or nausea, which usually resolve the same day.

Treatment Course

Initial Phase

Typically, Spravato® is administered twice per week for the first four weeks.

Maintenance Phase

Frequency decreases over time – usually once weekly, then every other week, depending on your progress.

Duration

Treatment is individualized. Some patients continue maintenance for several months or longer to sustain improvements.
