Diagnostic Psychiatric Evaluations in Wichita
Understanding your Mental Health Starts Here.
Taking the first step toward seeking help can feel overwhelming, and our expert team is here to guide you through it in a way that makes you feel comfortable and cared for.
A diagnostic psychiatric evaluation offers a safe, structured way to explore what you’re experiencing and identify the treatment that’s right for you. At KU Wichita Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences clinics, we listen with compassion, ask thoughtful questions, and use evidence-based tools to help you better understand your mental health needs.
What is a diagnostic psychiatric evaluation?
A diagnostic psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive assessment performed by a licensed psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. It includes a thoughtful conversation about your concerns, medical and mental health history and current symptoms. Together, we work to identify underlying conditions, clarify your experiences and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Your clinician will lead you through the process with compassion and expertise, drawing on both clinical experience and the support available through the University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita. Our clinic includes board-certified neuropsychologists and psychiatrists, offering deep diagnostic insight and a collaborative care environment.
How the evaluation process works:
Initial Visit (60 minutes or more)
You’ll meet with your clinician to discuss your medical, psychological and social history. This visit helps bring clarity to your symptoms and concerns, supporting your clinician’s ability to form an accurate diagnostic impression and inform the best treatment path.
Additional Evaluation/Intake Visits & Testing (if needed)
Depending on your situation, further sessions or testing may be scheduled, especially when differentiating mental health conditions or evaluating cognitive concerns.
Diagnosis & Treatment Planning
Once complete, you’ll receive a clear diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan—often including recommendations for medication, therapy and follow-up support.
Coordination with Neuropsychologists
If symptoms suggest cognitive or memory-related issues, evaluation by our board-certified neuropsychologists may be recommended. These specialists conduct detailed testing to explore how you function in daily life, using a range of testing techniques.

(Some insurance plans, however, may require a referral from a primary care provider, neurologist, psychiatrist, internist, or other medical care provider.)
