Neuropsychological Testing for Children and Teens in Wichita

Understanding How Your Child Thinks, Learns and Grows

Some children face challenges that extend beyond their emotions or behavior, affecting how they learn, remember and solve problems. Neuropsychological testing offers an in-depth examination of your child’s brain-based abilities, enabling families, schools and health care providers to understand the support required.

At KU Wichita Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences clinics, our neuropsychologists specialize in working with children and adolescents, offering expert evaluations through neuropsychological testing.

What is neuropsychological testing?

Neuropsychological testing uses standardized tools to measure how a child or adolescent’s brain functions in areas such as:

  • Attention and concentration
  • Memory and learning
  • Problem-solving and reasoning
  • Language and communication
  • Visual and motor skills
  • Emotional and social functioning

Neuropsychological testing is especially helpful for children with:

  • Learning differences or unexplained school difficulties
  • Traumatic brain injury or concussion
  • Seizure disorders
  • Developmental or genetic conditions
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Medical conditions affecting brain development

How neuropsychological testing works:

Clinical Interview

The neuropsychologist meets with you and your child to gather history and concerns. This visit helps inform your provider prior to testing.

Testing Sessions

Your child completes a variety of tasks and activities. Testing may take several hours and sometimes requires multiple visits.

Scoring & Interpretation

Results are compared with developmental expectations and medical history.

Feedback & Recommendations

Families receive a detailed written report and meet with the clinician to discuss results and next steps, often including recommendations for medication, therapy and follow-up support.
